Opportunity & Background

The Jewish Foundation for the Righteous (the JFR) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to financial support for, and preservation of the stories of, righteous Christians that provided life-saving aid and rescue to Jews during the Holocaust. The JFR engaged us to create experiences that were easy to understand for older audiences looking to donate, but engaging enough to captivate younger audiences for their educational programs.

The JFR’s website lived on an enterprise web solution that integrates directly with their donor relations management tool. While the donor relations tool is crucial to their business, the enterprise solution is costly and lacks the customization and scalability that the JFR was looking for in a content management system.

Approach

Our relationship with the JFR was established through technology consulting. We proposed a move from their enterprise system to creating a custom content management system built on the WordPress engine to tailor-fit their needs. This new system is still able to integrate easily with their donor relations management system to preserve their donor database and online donation functionalities.

Design creation of the new website was done by the JFR’s longtime design agency partner. We provided guidance on adapting the designs for mobile and executed all development. The new website includes features such a more robust organization system for their Rescuer stories and an interactive map that links each country to related stories of rescue.

We also built in an eCommerce solution for the sale of the JFR’s merchandise, as well as integrated their recommended reading list - sold through the Amazon Associates program. Additionally, we developed a custom eCard system that integrates with their donation system, allowing donors to send Hanukkah and Jewish New Year eCards to their loved-ones while offering them the opportunity to support the JFR.

Since the launch of the new website on Dec 1, 2014, we have transitioned to offer support in website maintenance as well as email marketing support.

Insights

In the time since launch, the JFR’s website has seen major increases in usability. A look at analytics from Dec 1, 2014 through Feb 1, 2015 in comparison to the same period the year prior shows a 44% increase in total users and a 47% increase in pages per session. Additionally, the updating the infrastructure to our custom content management system will result in thousands of dollars per year in savings over time.
